Tender Heart Gardens began as a queer and trans growing collective, founded in 2017. They currently grow on a 1/3 acre lot in the Urbandale floodplain, leased from the Ingham County Land Bank. Their collective team of growers and community members determines annual and long-term projects for the gardens, including beehives and a pollinator garden, fiber and dye plants, annual vegetables and perennial food crops.
Their harvest is shared among growers, volunteers and community members. A portion of their small commercial sales is donated annually to QTBIPOC community organizations and the growing team coordinates regular “Barn Raising” events to provide labor support to neighbor gardens. Group work days are frequently opened with “Skill Share” events, allowing collective members to trade knowledge and skills with their fellow gardeners.
Social events during the growing season allow community members to check out the garden and meet the growing team.
