Local TV Station, Food Banks partner to #ChooseHope, Not Hunger
Viewers are encouraged to tune into WLNS-TV 6 on December 6th for the 2018 Day of Giving. Themed “#ChooseHope, Not Hunger,” the Day of Giving will feature news segments and stories about how everyday members of the community are having an impact on hunger. Proceeds from the Day of Giving will benefit Greater Lansing Food Bank and Food Bank of South Central Michigan. Day of Giving is sponsored by Auto-Owners Insurance, along with help from Consumers Energy and 1-800-GOT-JUNK?. In addition to watching the Day of Giving coverage, viewers can participate in the Day of Giving by dropping off non-perishable goods at WLNS studios in Lansing; dropping off non-perishable goods at Consumers Energy in Jackson; or by visiting wlns.com and clicking the Day of Giving link to make a financial donation to your local food bank.
“It’s hard to believe that hunger exists right here, in our community,” says Eugene Shanahan, WLNS Operations Manager. “It’s vitally important that people support their local food banks. If we can raise awareness and provide meals for those in-need, this event will be a success.”
Last year’s Day of Giving raised enough food and funds to provide more than 36,000 meals in Mid-Michigan. This year, Greater Lansing Food Bank and Food Bank of South Central Michigan are hoping to provide even more meals.
“When it comes to hunger, WLNS-TV 6 really is ‘here for you,’” says Joe Wald, Executive Director at Greater Lansing Food Bank. “This is the 11th year of the Day of Giving broadcast, and each year we see an outpouring of support from the community as a result of the heightened awareness the coverage brings. This food drive makes a difference in our community and has an impact on those we serve.”
It is estimated that 1-in-7 area residents are at risk for going hungry.
