Greater Lansing Food Bank Launches Holiday Campaign, Spotlights Hidden Need
Hunger isn’t always visible. It may not announce itself with dramatic images. But make no mistake: Hunger is here in our community. In order to help those facing hunger, Greater Lansing Food Bank (GLFB) is kicking off its annual holiday campaign on November 3, 2017. Themed “Hunger is here. So are we,” GLFB hopes to raise awareness of this hidden issue. The campaign runs through January with a goal of raising enough food and funds to provide nutritious meals to anyone in-need across the Mid-Michigan region.
“Making certain that no one in our community goes hungry is a 365-day-a-year challenge,” says Joe Wald, Executive Director of Greater Lansing Food Bank. “Donations raised through the holiday campaign are critical since they allow us to distribute nutritious food during the winter months when heating costs and other factors constrain budgets.”
In addition to working with long time partners to gather food for the Holidays, Greater Lansing Food Bank has resources available to organizations that would like to hold a food drive. These resources include information packets, donation bins and other tools. Individuals may also drop food off at Greater Lansing Food Bank’s warehouse location by the airport, anytime during business hours without an appointment. Wald emphasizes the life-changing impact of every donation. “Most of our clients are children and the elderly,” says Wald. “We also see the ‘working poor’ who have jobs but have difficultly covering monthly expenses.”
“We live in a community that truly cares,” Wald says, noting that GLFB receives donations from people of all ages and means. “We could not do this without the support of our many valued partners.”
Greater Lansing Food Bank (GLFB) is a non-profit organization that provides emergency food to individuals and families in need in Ingham, Eaton, Clinton, Shiawassee, Clare, Isabella and Gratiot counties. It raises money, food and in-kind contributions to meet emergency food needs; coordinates and supports the work of area food pantries; rescues wholesome excess food that would otherwise go to waste; promotes, encourages and emphasizes self-help programs toward the goal of self-sufficiency; and educates the community on hunger issues.
