Seniors Face Tough Choices in Winter

This New Year has already brought unpredictable extremes. With unpredictable weather, comes unpredictable utility bills and other emergency expenses such as frozen pipes or dead car batteries. For seniors on fixed incomes, this can create significant issues.

Even $50 in additional costs can cause a senior’s budgets to go out of balance. When this happens, seniors face a tough choice: whether to buy food or pay for heating costs. Often there is not enough to cover important needs when the unexpected strikes. And it isn’t just seniors who live below the poverty level who are at risk for going hungry. Seniors who live just above the poverty line are often ineligible for public assistance, which means they have no safety net when they are hit with winter expenses. Other risk factors for seniors include disabilities, caring for grandchildren and being recently retired.

Greater Lansing Food Bank (GLFB) helps seniors avoid tough choices in the winter. GLFB relieves seniors’ financial stress by providing nutritious food at no cost to them. We work with 140+ community agencies to ensure that nutritious food is accessible to all, and we even work with these partners to deliver food to homebound seniors. No matter what challenges they face, we are able to help them thanks to your support.

THANK YOU for supporting Greater Lansing Food Bank.
