Greater Lansing Food Bank Breaks Ground on Larger Facility
LANSING, MI – Greater Lansing Food Bank (GLFB) announced Thursday via a virtual groundbreaking ceremony, it will begin construction of a new facility following 37 years at their current warehouse in north Lansing. The new site, located in Bath, Michigan, is part of GLFB’s Building Hope campaign, which aims to expand its emergency food services throughout all seven counties that GLFB serves.
The new facility is a crucial investment in capacity as part of GLFB’s $7.5 million campaign to further address hunger in the region. It will increase the storage capacity of the cooler and freezer rooms by 250 percent and 110 percent, respectively, and the dry storage by 80 percent, giving the food bank greater ability to provide critical nutrition to those struggling with hunger in mid-Michigan. GLFB estimates it will need to double the number of meals served annually by 2025.
“Year after year, Greater Lansing Food Bank rises to the top of organizations supported by associates at Jackson. That’s why, when the food bank came to me last year with this need and their vision for Building Hope, I wanted Jackson to become involved,” said Danielle Robinson, assistant vice president of Corporate Philanthropy at Jackson National Life Insurance Company (Jackson®). “Today, I am proud to share that together with our associates, we have committed $750,000 to underwrite the Jackson Volunteer Center at Greater Lansing Food Bank.”
“This new location marks the biggest project GLFB has ever undertaken,” said food bank CEO Michelle Lantz. “To keep up with the demand of those struggling with hunger, we need to increase our capacity, improve technology for quicker distribution and innovate our systems. This new facility is key in the vision to improve our community’s health and well-being.”
