Each year as Spring approaches, the Garden Project begins to fill the Resource Center with all of its gardening goodies. This includes thousands of seed packets that will be available to all of the community and home gardeners within our network come April.
Gardeners visiting the Resource Center often ask where all of our seeds come from. Our seeds are generously donated throughout the fall and winter months from seed companies and organizations all over the nation and sometimes, the world. In total, just for this season, we have received over 19,000 seed packets!
This year we partnered with Bentley Seeds in Cambridge, NY to take advantage of their “packet for packet” donation program. For every packet purchased, they donate a packet to a cause that supports gardening efforts, like the Garden Project’s. We asked them to share why they chose the Garden Project as a program to donate to, and we were blown away by their response!
“From hundreds of requests to join the program in 2015, The Greater Lansing Food Bank was selected because of their vast network throughout the state of Michigan. With a donation of a few thousand packets the volunteers and members of GLFB are able to make an impact at more than 90 community gardens, harvesting hundreds of pounds of food, and supporting countless struggling families.
It really is incredible, they deserve all of the credit for making our donation program a success and we couldn’t be happier to make them a part of it.”
I think it goes without saying that we are happy to be a part of it as well!
